Garment triage

A better first look at common clothing problems.

Use this guide to collect useful observations before an alteration or repair enquiry. It is general information, not a remote technical diagnosis.

Loose hem

Check whether stitching has released while the folded fabric remains intact. Avoid pulling remaining threads and photograph the full hem and failure point.

Opening seam

Look for the difference between failed thread and torn fabric. Damage beside a seam can require reinforcement rather than a simple restitch.

Zip trouble

Note whether the slider moves, whether teeth are missing or misaligned, and whether the tape has separated from the garment.

Button or fastening

Keep the original component if possible. Size, finish and colour matter when a replacement needs to blend with the garment.

Fit change

Taking in and letting out are not mirror images. Pockets, linings and available seam allowance can determine what is practical.

Worn fabric

Inspect the cloth around a hole or thin area, not just the visible centre. Weak surrounding fabric can change the repair approach.

Photo checklist

Give the enquiry useful context.

  • One photo of the entire garment.
  • A close view of the problem.
  • A reverse-side image when useful.
  • The care or fabric label when relevant.
  • A short description of the result you want.
Care note.
Do not use glue, aggressive stain treatments or irreversible cutting on an area you hope to have repaired before receiving appropriate professional advice.
